Asheville, NC

Green Transit, Ltd. will soon begin a revolutionary mass transportation system in the NC Mountains; with the first rider being Asheville Mayor Terry Belamy.
Service will cover Buncombe and Madison counties and the City of Asheville.
Western North Carolina and especially the Asheville area is a Mecca for new green companies and Green Transit, Ltd. will provide green options not available to date to the WNC citizens, backers say.
Green Transit, Ltd. is an earth friendly, subscription based, shared ride, private transportation service. The company will utilize vehicles powered by alternative fuels, like bio-diesel, natural gas and electricity in order to help improve our mountain air. Green Transit, Ltd. was recently awarded a grant from the NC Division of Air Quality for Bio-diesel tanks in Madison Co. and Southern Buncombe Co.
Green Transit, Ltd. believes that the existing transportation choices, the single occupant automobile, the public bus, human service vehicles or private taxi service, which all rely on foreign petroleum, are not the answers to air pollution, congestion and future parking problems for a regional hub like Asheville.
The company's mission statement proclaims that the goal of Green Transit, Ltd. is to provide an earth-friendly, subscription based transportation system for Buncombe, Madison, Henderson and Haywood counties, as well as Asheville. The company will allow profit sharing with all employees. The service is demand responsive for a subscription card holder calling for service the next day.
Green Transit's fleet now consists of bio diesel fueled four passenger car(s).
In the near future we will be adding a CNG (compressed natural gas) van(s). Our short range plan calls for adding an electrically powered bus in early '08.
When you share a ride with 2 or 3 other passengers, not only is there a reduction in the fare paid, you also triple or quadruple your fuel efficiency, the company says. Plus, you will meet other forward-thinking, environmentally conscious folks while getting to know them in the cozy atmosphere of a shared ride.
To use the service, contact the company at least 24 hours before you wish to ride. Subscribers pay an annual fee. Sign up other members to get a bonus.
The cost for each ride is determined by the dispatcher and confirmed by the rider. Cost depends on the distance traveled, the number of passengers and the type of vehicle. Usually it's less than half the cost of a taxicab ride for the same distance with three or more passengers. Billing is done monthly by email.
